Vintage Siam Silver Niello Cuff Links Thai Goddess Mekkala 1940s
Vintage
This is a unique pair of vintage Siam silver chain cuff links dating to the 1940s, featuring traditional niello work with classic Thai figural motifs. The rectangular panels display a detailed image commonly associated with Mekkala, the Goddess of Lightning, rendered in silver relief against a rich black niello background. The reverse oval links feature an elegant floral design, also characteristic of vintage Siam silver jewelry. Niello work, also known as nielloware, is created by engraving silver and filling the recessed areas with a dark sulfur-based alloy that is fired to create dramatic contrast. These traditional Thai designs are often inspired by scenes and figures from the Ramakien, Thailand’s adaptation of the Indian epic Ramayana. The cuff links are connected by traditional silver chain links and retain their natural vintage patina, adding to their authentic mid-century character. Many original Siam silver exports from this era were unsigned, as is the case with this pair.
